A Tentative Start
I've taken delivery of a new dehydrator its a Westfalia machine which is the cheapest I could find the rationale being that I will build one to my own design when I see how well It works and how best to improve 0n it.
It's just a small hair drier type arrangement in the lid blowing down the center of five vented round trays with an on off switch.
I bought mine at this time of year to dry the large show type onions that I grew last year and they are now sprouting into new growth with all the heat from the central heating. The delivery was a little on the slow side but that is my only moan.
At my first attempt at drying I was a little disappointed with the onions but I bottled them up in kilner jars anyway, what was disappointing was that their was very little onion smell when they were dried and when I chewed on one of these little pieces of dehydrated onion there was no pungent onion taste in fact when my daughter tasted them they were declared very nice for snacks. Anyway a couple of days later we did some steak and onions in the oven, the aroma that came from the kitchen and the taste of the Meal produced an instant convert. I am now a fan and I have tried dehydrated apple and banana and even a mushroom under threat of death if I didn't leave them alone "can't decide if I'm brave or foolish". Just waiting for some more onions to finish so I will sign of now and I promise to keep you posted this time.
